Glossary
Spay
- Neutering a female animal, it involves removing both the uterus and the ovaries.
Castrate - Neutering a male animal.  It involves removing both testicles
Neutering - a general term that can be used for both male and female animals
De-sexing - the same as neutering, a general term, more commonly used in the USA
Ovario-hysterectomy  - a more correct scientific term which means to remove both the ovaries and uterus of a female animal
Ovariectomy- This describes the removal of just the ovaries, the uterus is left inside.  This is not a common technique of neutering an animal, and is more commonly done in Europe.
